BENGKULU, KOMPAS.com - An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale hit Bengkulu province on Sunday. The quake which struck at 04.56 p.m. was centered 116 km southwest of Lais in North Bengkulu at a depth of 20 km, spokesman for the Kapahiang meteorology, climatology and geophysics office Dayat said.
The quake was felt by people living in Bengkulu town, he said. A few days ago a magnitude 5.5 quake shook the province with its epicenter located 64 km northwest of Bintuhan, Bengkulu, at a depth of 26 km.
The province was rocked by a powerful quake with a magnitude of 7.9 in 2007 when tens of people perished and thousands of houses were destroyed.
