JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Indonesian products have been rejected in Euruope, specifically in Finland. The products are textile and handcrafts. The Indonesian products have been known to use chemicals, but without having the proper Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH).
"This might threat many other (products) in the future," said Adri Yuda from the Product Development of Industry Support Services Strategics Business of PT Surveyor Indonesia.
Though it's a threat, actually if Indonesia can coordinate the relevant government institutions and the private parties, the technical policies for REACH registration can be achieved. It's even an opportunity for Indonesia to take over the Chinese textile, music instruments, radiators, kitchenwares, toys, and even pens that have all been rejected in Europe too.
According to Adri, the chance to take over the Chinese market share in Europe by Indonesia is possible if our country has a laboratory with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) certification. "It would be good if Indonesia had a GLP certified laboratory so the export to Europe wouldn't drop."
It's worth noting that exporters to the European Union must take care because in Europe there is a policy on chemical usage safety for all products in circulation. Based on the research of the Department of Trade's R&D, 56 percent of exporters are unaware of this new policy.
The policy in the European Union, REACH, has been applied in stages, starting from June 1, 2007, until December 2010. The policy arranges for all products circulating in Europe, including imported ones, to be registered for their chemical contents.
If a product didn't have the proper registrations for its chemicals, it would be banned from the European Union. (Asnil Bambani Amri/Kontan/C17-09)
