JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The collapse of a building at the Tanah Abang shopping district this morning has buried a number of people under the rubble. Based on observation on the location and statements from a number of officers, screams of "help" and "Allahu Akbar" (God Almighty) have been heard under the rubble.

"Many are buried, and echoes could be heard from below, saying 'Allahu akbar' and crying for help," said an evacuation officer who wished to be anonymous.

The collapsed part of the building was on the third floor, and was going to be remodelled into a toilet. Currently dozens of officers are doing the evacuation process with welding tools and bolt cutters.

Besides buried victims, two vehicles on the location were damaged by the fallen debris. Meanwhile the traffic to Tanah Abang has been closed and redirected. (Fikria Hidayat/C17-09)
