JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - A building collapsed at Tanah Abang shopping district, Jakarta. A number of visitors suspected to be buried below the rubble.

An officer of the Traffic Management Center of the Jakarta Police traffic directorate contacted by Kompas.com, Wednesday, confirmed the incident. "We received report from the people and must double check. Officers have been sent to the location."

Meanwhile, according to Safari, a member of the Central Jakarta Fire Brigade, the connecting bridge of the building collapsed around 10.20 am. A number of people are suspected to be buried under the rubble, because the incident occurred while there were shoppers.

For now, the fire-brigade has sent four ambulance rescue units and one crane to remove the rubble, and also eight fire-engines to assist evacuation. "There will also be additional fire-engines from West Jakarta," said Safari. (MBK,GLO/C17-09)
