BANDUNG, KOMPAS.com - About 30 activists from the Islamic Students Association (HMI), Bandung branch, held a rally on Tuesday to demand that Vice President Boediono, in his capacity as former Bank Indonesia governor, account for the Bank Century case. They demonstrated in front of the West Java governor’s office and set fire to used tires while chanting slogans for the settling of the Bank Century case.
Bank Century almost collapsed some time ago when its assets were flown overseas by najor share-holder Robert Tantular. In order to help the ailing bank, the government provided it with bailout funds amounting to Rp6.7 trillion without the approval of the House of Representatives (DPR). In their demand, demonstrators called for the return of Bank Century customers’ funds which up to now remained unsettled.
They said that the Bank Century case was a robbery of the people’s money by a bank. "Therefore, we are demanding the moral, political and legal responsibility of Boediono in his capacity as former governor of Bank Indonesia, the central bank. We are also demanding the responsibility of Sri Mulyani as the finance minister who issued the bailout policy. We also are demanding the responsibility of the Deposit Insurance Agency (LPS) which realized the disbursement of the bailout funds," rally coordinator Pratiwa Maulana said.
Maulana said that the activists also urged the House to form its inquiry committee into the bank case immediately before the legislators were on recess at the end of this year. He said that the activists also supported the call for the exposure by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) of the flows of Bank Century funds.
"We support the public insistence that PPATK should expose the flows of the bailout funds for Bank Century. PPATK should not be afraid because we and the people are ready to protect them," he said.
