DUMAI, KOMPAS.com - Fiberglass boats continued to sail on Dumai waters, Riau Islands province, on Wednesday although the government had banned fiberglass vessels from sailing in Indonesia’s territorial waters. The fiberglass boat, Batam Jet, which carried more than a hundred passengers from Batam, Tanjung Balai Karimun, Selat Panjang and Bengkalis, arrived in Dumai port, Wednesday afternoon.
The Transportation Ministry had previously banned fiberglass boats from the waters in Indonesia following the sinking of the Dumai Express 10 in Batam, Durian Strait, Dumai waters, Riau Islands province, on Nov. 22. The passengers of Batam Jet were not worried about their safety just because such type of boat went down several days ago killing at least 27 people.
"I was not afraid and during the trip from Batam the waves were not so high," said Rina (35), one of the passengers.
Sharing the experience, Karni (53), said she was also not afraid, despite the rather high waves and rough sea. By Monday, rescuers have found 255 survivors after the ferry boat Dumai Express 10 sank off Tokong Hiu, Karimun district, Riau Islands province, last Sunday morning.
